the little mermaid

the little mermaid

Guided by voices
laughter echoes in us
our cavernous mouths
deep and empty and
moist with unsung tears.

I drape you around my neck
And feel you drip golden
From one over-extension down my spine.

All this for a pair of working limbs
on which you never learned to run.

She looks at me
and I know that whatever
us there was
is now
then.
