National Poetry Month 2/30

If I had to die today,

I think I’d like to drown

because at least that

would be familiar.

Ask me fifteen years ago,

and I think my answer

would be the same.

I think I’d like to drown

because then I’d know

for absolute-certain-facts-of-life

that I can’t breathe under water.

But please don’t ask me tomorrow.

I think tomorrow

I’d prefer to live.
